Secondary School Teacher, Nigel Abraham has been made to pay for the grievous crime he committed in June 2006 in murdering his wife of 16 years, Bernadette.
The 43-year old teacher of St. Paul¹s, St. George¹s was found guilty on March 5 for the murder, and was due to be sentenced on March 18. However, sentencing of the convicted teacher was deferred for the June Assizes due to a request of a social inquiry report made by the defense council, Derick Sylvester to be done on his client by the Ministry of Social Development before sentencing is handed down.
High Court Judge, Madam Justice Clare Henry handed down a 15-year prison term on Abraham last week Thursday. At the conclusion of the case, Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Christopher Nelson gave early notice to the court that his Office was not seeking the death penalty.
Sylvester described his client as a model prisoner.
Abraham is currently engaged in teaching CXC O¹Level Subjects at the Richmond Hill Prison, and is engaged in the Religious Ministry.
Abraham was charged with intentionally causing the death of his wife who, herself, was a primary school teacher by unlawful harm between Thursday June 22 and Friday June 23, 2006.
The court learnt that Abraham¹s death was due to affictia as a result of manual strangulation.
She was discovered dead inside of her house at Morne Delice, St. Paul¹s by the family¹s close neighbour, Gillian ŒPonder¹ Noel at about 9:00 a.m. on June 23.
